A Fresh Approach To Community Service: Surrey Young Professionals Create A Social Service Organization

SURREY, BC: Some of Surrey’s top young leaders made history last Saturday March 29th by chartering one of very few young professional Rotary Clubs in worldwide, The Rotary Club of Surrey Central City. The group of 25 which is made up of some of Greater Vancouver’s most active young leaders volunteer their time and resources to better their communities, taking to the organizations mantra of “service above self” while making it a social endeavor.

The group which meets weekly at a pub was started last year by a small few grew and exponentially. They have already engaged in several projects including the funding of education projects with a Tanzanian orphanage and the coordination of youth leadership development programs such as “Youth Adventures in Leadership.” The group also actively supports the professional, personal and social development of all its members by creating opportunities for them to meet other professionals, travel, hear from engaging speakers, and champion service projects in their own communities.

“I envision our organization being a major source of positive influence from our young leaders in Surrey,” said Denny Hollick, the Founding President of Central City Rotary. “When we started the organization I wanted a place for young ambitious people to get together, socialize, and catalyze positive change in our community. With the level of talent and ambition this group has, many are excited about what we can accomplish.”

The group is made up of some of Surrey’s most talented and visible young professionals and range from the ages 23-39. Several of them have been recognized by the Surrey Board of Trade as the “Top 25 Under 25,” Vancouver’s “Leaders of Tomorrow,” in addition to many other significant individual achievements. They connect most Monday evenings at 7:30 PM at the Surrey Central Brewpub to focus on new projects, invite engaging speakers, or enjoy the company of others.

Rotary is an international service organization created in 1905 with over 1.2 million members worldwide in 200 countries and geographical areas. The organization brings together a global network of volunteer leaders who dedicate their time and talent to tackle the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges.
